Chest of drawers
The majority of chests of drawers produced from the late 18th century onwards were practical pieces of antique bedroom or dressing room furniture. Sometimes of solid mahogany, but more often veneered on oak or pine, their quality can vary widely. The standard arrangement was either four long drawers of graduated depth or two short drawers with three graduated long drawers beneath. Some pieces were also fitted with what is usually referred to as a brushing slide.
By 1800 the straight-fronted chest had a popular alternative in the bowfronted variety, which continued in production throughout the 19th century.
