The Seth Thomas Company

The Seth Thomas Company was founded in 1853. They started making longcase antique clocks with wooden movements before branching out into shelf clocks, phasing in brass movements in 1848, and ceasing wooden movements two years later.

Seth Thomas was very conservative, and after his death in 1859 his sons introduced many new types of clocks, including regulators, perpetual calendar clocks and tambour clocks. Most Seth Thomas antique clocks date between 1881 and 1918 and have the date stamped in ink -often the year is reverse and followed by a letter representing the month of manufactured.
